Make a Date of It

THE TEAR SHEET

MAKE A DATE OF IT

Johan Volkmer's thesis took a whole year

Well, actually, I don’t know how long it took him, but it IS a calendar. And if his sped-up ‘Making Of’ video on his website is to be believed, you would think he accomplished it in less time than you’d think, considering how involved the work appears. And that’s what makes this piece so noteworthy: calendars can be such utilitarian things, to create such intricate art installations with every new month elevates it beyond the – pardon the pun – everyday.

A thesis project, Johan’s pop-up calendar is paper sculpture, pop-up book and dated goods all at once, and you really get the full effect when you open each month’s entry to see the reveal of each of the twelve sculptural illustrations. Here in this video Johan takes his time showing you each page of the calendar. There’s something very soothing about having a book presented to you. I could watch this all day. Or all year for that matter.
